In stores, no extra candy being sold at the super market, and no advertisements for decorations etc. In South Africa, Halloween is much different than what we are used to. Unlike in the states, there are no Spirit Costume stores. In fact, driving down the street you don’t see anything different that would indicate it being Halloween season. Even though it is not in your face, Halloween is still celebrated by many of the people here in Africa. Just a bit differently than we are used to – it is a scary and dark time. Starting around the 30th of October all of the Satanic cults and groups join together to start worshiping and sacrificing things to Satan. When we went to breakfast the morning of the 30th, we got word that the rituals had started and that they had already given a human sacrifice. Our group decided to battle against the evil that was being summoned. We had a 24-hour prayer time, to pray for protection over the people here. Halloween night we had a get together in our barn to celebrate the light that we have in our lives. The night was centered around the idea of giving thanks to God and his blessings for us. We dressed up in costumes of Bible characters… we came up with some pretty crazy ideas. Queen Ester, Shadrak, Mishak and Abendago, The tree of knowledge, Love, Day and Night, Eve, The Lovers from Song of Solomon, The Flood, God’s promise of the rainbow, David and Goliath ETC. It was a fun filled night with treats and fun little games to play, we even got some fireworks!- which were quite hilarious. We ended the night in a time of worship, it was so amazing to glorify God and thank him for the light he provides on such a dark day!
